Once a mystery boombox with the only picture online a very blurry mess now becomes part of the collection!
As rare as this box is, ironically 3 of these showed up within months of each other. I managed to snag 2 units to make one good one. But that may be the last time we'll see this box up for sale for a long time.....
In this video I will fully restore this both cosmetically, mechanically and electronically, as well as a full demonstration.

Way overbuilt industrial tanks. And they perform just as well, too. You can...

If you would like to become a Patron: www.patreon.com/spatsandharley This is a very special episode because of the history of the VCR and TV in this video. While the TV is not the original, it is the same exact model. But the VCR, on the other hand, is the same exact unit. I know the complete history of the VCR, form the unboxing in 1988, up until I obtained it in 2008, and now this video on it...

So I lucked out and found one of these guys at the Goodwill bins. Everything is in working order except for the EQ, which seems to be not working at all. Pretty general question, but where would you start on diagnosing that?
9:09...Yep, no stranger to that. When I had to service one of my GE decks, had to pick off bit by bit the tar that the belt turned into off the flywheel and drive motor spindle.. I do not have an ultrasonic cleaner, but rubbing alcohol seemed to have helped a lot to remove it,
I'll give you $50 for it.
Nice my grandpa did have one till he was a adult
When I was a kid I remember old color TVs had a problem staying in the right colors. People's faces would slowly go from flesh tones to green. You had to constantly adjust the colors, or live with people turning green. Sometime around 1970 color TVs had automatic fine tuning and the color of people's faces stayed the same throughout the whole show.
I thought about you when I saw this on eBay I did not buy it because I figured it would sustain damage
We need more of this
Oh I so miss my boom box. I thought mine was always the biggest and the best. lol 😂. That thing was big and heavy with all them batteries.
T-shirt please
I wonder how much research that this guy has done on the technology that is being used to data mine everything we do. They sell that data, which is our personal intellectual property, and they don't disclose the accounting to us about how much income they are gaining from our data. They can tell when you turn on a Blender, micro, AC, WHATEVER. And also a multi level billing system, where they charge you MORE NOT LESS THAN BEFORE. My bill went up not down after install, they can do unimaginable things with the help of these and it's part of the surveillance state that's become increasingly concerning
D--V--E. Black and yellow black and yellow
It's interesting that the FM tuner shows the frequency down to .00 MHz, but never uses that last segment, except maybe if you switch it to European tuning mode.
Based on a Sanyo or a Sharp by the looks of it.
Hello Spats! I was waiting for you to finally upload this video ha! I am the one that purchased the other one from Ebay! The first one you purchased that was damaged,I looked at that one but I was not happy with this condition. The one I purchased almost looks new and it has the extremely rare owner's manual with it as well! However , after requesting the seller to box the boombox up a particular way for safety purposes they didn't, and it came to me with the cassette door partially popped out,and the power button sometimes doesn't engage to power up it up. But it almost looks new. I'm probably going to be putting it back up for sale.Let me know if you would like another one! Cheers! Larry
Last Wednesday I picked up a Panasonic RX-5050 boombox. I found at a flea market for $15 in %100 working condition. I did just got done going through it to clean and lubricate the tape transport. The belts were still good had plenty of tension and weren't deformed. So I left the original belts in the unit.
The one i had was the engineers model . It was the same except the bottom art design was criss-cross patern as apposed to this one rectangle pattern.
I also spotted a (presumably) new old stock GPX personal radio/cassette player… are we about to get our GPX on in the near future?
It will be part of another boombox video as it is sorta related.
We really are overdue to get our GPX ON......
Not bad at all, especially considering what you had to go through to get there! Fantastic job Spats!!!
holy hell man nothing pisses me off more than a seller that treats these classic radios with no regard for packing.. glad another showed up so quickly.. GE made some real winners back in the 80's.. got a mint Blockbuster sitting right next to me.. what a looker..
Ahh the great packing done by gremlin's.. Enjoy the extra warm weather yinz it's hot !!!
Looks great for a boombox my dad had it the sound was so good.
Regarding shipping damage, I nowadays always write the fleabay seller a message with explicit instructions on how to package an item so that it will arrive safely, and also tell examples of what not to do. If they choose to ignore all that and it arrives damaged, it's refund time. With "unreplaceable" things, I sometimes even go on a road trip and pick stuff up directly so it can't be damaged during shipping.
Actually, I have seen couple of these on both Ebay and Facebook Marketplace recently. Still on the hunt for that CD version.
Very nice, great job, Spats, making lemonade out of a lemon! 😊 I have a very small collection of boomboxes, and I've never yet had any GE box, I wonder if GE made their own or were they made by Sanyo or Panasonic or another manufacturer?
It is a combination of both: GE made their own (Hong Kong or Singapore) and will have an FCC ID that starts with AKJ. They used Funai as an OEM (FCC ID A56 or ADT) for some models (very well made and fantastic performers) with some models unique only to GE (3-6035A for example as shown in this video; The 3-6035B was the same but made by GE Singapore). The 3-6045A was custom made for GE by Capetronic (FCC ID ANV) and there is a Telefunken clone of it.
@@spatsbear thank you so much for the information! I was sure you'd know, and I appreciate your time and info.
God the boombox days your making feel old as dirt
Looks great now 👏🏻 great job
Omg that sucks what happened to that radio😢
I’ve seen that first boombox when I was in grade school omg😮
My grandfather has this exact boombox in his attic i remember seeing it as a kid
great job,thanks for sharing.
ok.. these cassette decks allow you to remove the flywheel cover by providing holes to get to the screws.. explain to me why they cover up one of the screws to allow you to remove the tape motor.. seriously.. so you have to basically remove the plastic surrounding the cassette mech.. which is a pain.. when they could have just left a courtesy hole to remove the screw.. grrrr... great video BTW!
just curious but what do u think of miele appliances, i have those in my kitchen (canadian miele).
Sie haben nicht die Fynamik guter Lautsprecher, aber eine phantastische Raeumlichkeit!
My father bought a MUNTZ 21 in 1955. Worked well in metro DC, bug when we moved to CT he had to buy a GE with 3 IF's. I got the Muntz which contrinuted to my education in TV repair and died a "noble" death 😅 .
Thanks for flipping through the manual, was wondering how to oil a Royal 882.
I have a 1982 rca Colortrak tv. Mine’s rarer like yours.
This Maytag Washer Is Better Than Samsung Front Load Washer
I had this same boombox in '82. As time past my friends would buy bigger more impressive boomboxes but one thing their boomboxes couldn't compete is how clean it would record music off the radio in the chrome mode
The 1986 Chrysler New Yorker weighs 2,719 pounds and has a 103.3-inch wheelbase, and is 187.2 inches long. It has two engine options: A standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 100 horsepower at 4,800 rpm An optional turbo four that produces 146 horsepower at 5,200 rpm
Still own the chrysler new-yorker?
what is the song in the intro?
I had an earlier version of the system 3 corner Great TV but my was white
That’s the beauty of American made products. They were built to last. My parents had this exact coffee maker for years. They loved it.
Thank you for this video! I found one of these VCR's recently. I got it mechanically working (belt issues of course), loads smoothly and plays with sound but no picture, and I was about to start diagnosing if I can find a service manual -- but it looks like I should start with a recapping. So, where did you find the service manual? I'm looking all over Google, and all I can find is a SAMs copy for sale. The manual you're using looks like it may be much better than SAMs -- can you tell me where you bought it, or can I get a copy from you?
I have one of these! The cord just died. I can't figure out how to get it apart. HELP!
The video is finally 15 years old now
Wonder why this has those slashes in the captions? I don't have this DVD so can't check myself, but most Disney DVDs have the identical text on the closed caption signal and the player-decoded subtitles.
Digital "converter boxes" are required to output captions as a signal that can still be decoded by old decoders. Captions work a bit differently on DVDs also but I've never understood exactly how, some early Blu-Ray discs have them also. Some cheaper DVD players won't output the caption signal. Modern Blu-Ray players which lack analog video outputs have caption decoders built in. My Oppo player can also display them from digitized TV recordings played through a hard drive.
I just found it at a flea market for 20 bucks! Got free tapes too! It’s awesome!
Though I’m not sure why, but both the radio and tape turn into static noise when I turn the volume down… and then it doesn’t play the sounds at all after less than volume 4... Is that normal?
Unfortunately I was born in 2008 and didn’t grow up using tapes and radios. It was totally worth buying it though!
